In the spirit of all things Euro, I've found this clip of the top 5 goals of the tournament thus far and with a host of rockets to choose from I thought it displayed a descent show-case. Kudos to the editor.
It's been a week to the day since we last saw Ronaldo take the field with his green Nike Mercurial Vapor's and it got me wondering if Nike were going to give anyone else a pair of coloured weapons to promote for the finals? I don't know the answer to that and only time will tell so just enjoy this compilation of images I've put together to pay homage to the man with the pine green boots even Robin Hood would be jealous of... not Little John though, he wore the common brown leather boots and got laughed at all the time.
He makes about 4 million dollars a year plying his trade in Russia for Zenit St.Petersburg, yet he has been a revelation in this tournament and now there are a number of clubs wanting his services no matter what the price. Rumours have it that he'll be joining every big team around England and Spain, but true to form, Arsene Wenger is claiming that Arshavin suits Arsenal's style of play and that he would make a fitting inclusion to his team, given that they've lost so many key midfield players through the off season. I'd love to see Andrei Arshavin or Russia's 'Little Jewel' as he is also known, take the piss in the Premier League next year and especially for Arsenal. They play the nicest brand of flowing football and they would both benefit from it highly. Arshavin has turned so many heads of late and if Russia go all the way, without a doubt he'll be in line to win the player of the tournament award.
Watch him and his comrades in action tonight against the might of Spain.
Such is a players ego sometimes, that it causes those watching to say "What the f#*k was he thinking!?"... this was one of those moments and it's a little segment that I'll be looking out for more regularly in the future. While conducting a post match interview, Colin Kazim-Richards, also known as Colin Kâzım or Kâzım Kâzım in Turkey, decided to hold a cell phone close to his ear the entire time. Perhaps he was being interviewed on the other end or perhaps he was hoping that he wouldn't be asked about Turkey's exit from the Euro 2008 tournament... whatever the case, it didn't work and instead it earned Colin Kazim Richards our inaugural "Euro Popstar Award"! Congratulations Kazim! For your efforts we'll be sending you your very own gold plated Douche, complete with date of achievement, the achievement itself and an instruction manual.
Know a player worthy of a "Euro Popstar Award" (they don't even have to be European), send me their details and a brief description of their popstar acheivement and leave the rest in my capable hands.
This match is being built up in the media like it's a final in itself. Both teams are itching to taste European glory for the first time in decades and it's only a matter of time before we find out who will take on ze Germans in the final. Spain were the last team to qualify for the semi's, therefore their wait has been less that of Russia's. This may work in their advantage, just as it did for Turkey, who also had less of a wait and who came flying out of the blocks from the first whistle. Russia, on the other hand have had an extra day's rest and may take a little longer to get into the match. If they are caught sleeping early on by the Spaniards, they'll go into the break a goal down, but I feel they are capable of awakening in the second half to bring home the goods. If it happens to go to penalties though, be sure that Spain will go through cause I just don't think Russia have the nerve to get them through pens.
Philipp Lahm rifled home a superb winner in the 90th minute to finally put away the Turks, who threatened to take the match into extra time when Semih Senturk made it 2-2 with four minutes left on the clock. A relieved Joachim Loew said:
In the closing minutes, we were trembling and Turkey never gave up. But we were lucky enough to score in 90th minute and we were confident they would not come back from that."
I'm quite surprised that Loew used the word "trembling" in his interview, especially when its the Germans that send those emotions through their unsuspecting enemies, but after last nights performance I felt that the word "trembling" could have been used to describe their vulnerable and tardy start to the match. A more organised team, like Russia would easily exploit the German lapses and walk away uncontested with the silverware. Full credit to the Turks though, who can take a lot from this tournament and build on it for the the 2010 World Cup.
Letzte nächte match-highlights: (Last nights match highlights:)
Predicting the outcome of the previous matches has been tougher than watching Donadoni make a coaching decision that didn't work against him... surely there are more talented Ities out there capable of coaching the team!? Anyway, looking at the game at hand the Turks are very, very, very under strength at the moment and will be missing eight key players from their first squad. I even heard a rumour that their third choice keeper may have to play on the field, thus is their weakness! Regardless of who plays though, they've proven in all but their first match that they never give up and have come from behind in their last three consecutive matches. Ze Germans on the other hand are at full strength and tonight is the night that I feel Turkish luck will run out. Ze Germans will punish them severely and meet Russia in the finals on Sunday.
I predict: Germany 4 v 1 Turkey (Scorers: Klose, Podolski, Ballack, Kazım Kazım & Kuranyi)
IMITATION ALERT! IMITATION ALERT! The Russians, banded by a supreme tactician Guus Hiddink will be put to the ultimate test tonight and I think everyone in the world will be eager to see the results. Like an enhancing micro-chip in new car, Hiddink has instilled a Dutch belief into his young energetic team and worked them tirelessly so that they are a cohesive, finely tuned unit; but how will they pull up against an experienced well run in engine who is scoring goals for fun!? This will be a highly entertaining match between two teams playing the same style of football, with the key differing factor being the experience of the Dutch players at this level... although it wouldn't surprise me if Guus pulls a few tricks out of his bag when the Dutch least expect it.
It was an all out offensive in the opening 30 minutes by ze Germans, a Blitzkrieg if you must and it caught the Portuguese defense at sixes and sevens. I honestly thought that Portugal had the goods to make the finals this year, but ze Germans stepped up when it mattered most and uncharacteristically threw a spanner in the works. There was very little mention of Cristiano Ronaldo throughout the match and even though he popped his head up now and then, it was his defensive laps which gave Miroslav Klose Germany's second goal. On the other hand Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Ballack were at the heart of every German offensive and their swift passing on the counter cut Portugal to pieces. Germany had been playing worse than Portugal in the group stages and led many to believe, my self included, that they just didn't have what it took to make the semi's... but ah those crazy Germans and their winning mentality proved us wrong.
These two teams came into the tournament as bookies favourites and tonight one of them goes home. I'm backing Portugal to progress, mainly because they've played more consistently throughout the group phase and have more experience in their team. Germany on the other hand have played well in patches, but their opponents were no where near the calibre of what Portugal had to face, except for Croatia that is, yet still the Germans struggled to find a flowing rhythm.
The Russians turned on their thrusters overnight and absolutely blew Sweden away. Just like wave after wave of MiG attacks the Russians kept pounding the Swedish goals and the score could have easily blown out to 5-0. Andrei Arshavin and Yuri Zhirkov were absolutely unstoppable in orchestrating play from the middle, while overall the Russians were harder, faster and smarter in their play. Next they come up against a firing Dutch side and I'll be interested to see how Guus Hiddink and co. approach the match.
Group leaders Spain left it late again to pinch 3 points from the grasp of the Greeks and round up what was a dismal tournament by the defending champs. Both teams exchanged blows early on, but never really capitalised till Greece's '04 Golden-boy Angelos Charisteas popped his head up just before half time and buried one past Pepe Reina. That then pushed the Spaniards into action and 15 minutes into the second half they were level through a de la Red rocket. Then in the 88th minute just to add salt to Greece's wounds Daniel Güiza stepped off his defender and headed past Antonis Nikopolidis to give the Greek captain a memorable farewell. Adios Antoni!
They lie, they cheat, they dive and make a theatre production out of every foul against them... and now they're through to the quarter finals. As much as I hate to admit it, the Ities are great at tournament football. They're naturally slow starters and just scrapped through the group on 4 points. Their experience get's them through most important matches and they always lift for the big games. Next up for them is Spain... I'm going to need a few days to think about how this one will pan out cause I can't really see Spain stopping the Ities at the moment.
Following the popular trend of 'teams that have already qualified going into the final group match' or 'TTHAQGITFGM' as it's more commonly known, the Dutch, as expected, fielded a make-shift "second team" against Romania... which brought on the sad realisation that if Romania's first team couldn't beat the Netherlands "second team", well then they didn't really deserve to move onto the quarters. My only concern is that the Netherlands may have shot themselves in the foot by not letting Romania through. If by chance Italy beat Spain (which is a real possibility), then they will face the Netherlands in the semi's... question is will they be able to beat Italy again?
The Dutch have had the most potent attack in the tournament so far, scoring 7 goals in two matches and conceding only 1. Romania on the other hand have struggled to come about goals and have also only conceded 1 goal... well 2 if you count the offside goal that Luca Toni scored, which on the replay wasn't really offside. Anyway, I'm hoping today that the result of this match favours both teams here, ie. Holland maintain their blistering pace to the tourny and Romania manage to qualify for the quarters. I think the only way this will happen is if both matches are a draw... anyone wanna guess what my prediction will be for this one?...
I really paid out on Croatia after their opening match of this tourny, but since then, they've done a complete 360 and have shown the passion that they're capable of playing with. What impressed me was that they were able to grab all 9 points from a mediocre group and field 2 almost completely different teams for their matches. Clearly coach Slaven Bilić knows what he is doing and has the confidence to play his reserve players and now that his main players are rested they'll be able to take on Turkey with fresh legs and increase their chances of making the semis... where I'm predicting they'll meet Portugal.
Matches between Austria and Germany are always heated affairs. National pride is the key motivator and emotions run wild, so what better way to see them in action other than putting them in a crammed stadium and watching them slog it out to the death... well almost. I lost track of the foul count early on, especially by the Austrians. (Austria 22 - 11 Germany). Anyway, it took a special kind of bomb from well outside the box to tear Austria to bits and once again give bragging rights to those industrious Germans! It also gave bragging rights to Ballack and maybe from now on, Drogba won't be as reluctant to let him take free kicks for Chelsea.
I wish, I wish upon a star, that Italy and France do not go far, knocked out in the first round of another tournament, tomorrow they'll fell nothing but lament, for taking Holland too lightly in their thoughts, a lesson by the football gods they have been taught.
Finally the Swiss fans were able to cheer for their team and after two matches of nothing but heart break, the team walked away with their heads high after a moral boosting win over a second string Portugal side, who now face Germany in the quarters... not the semi's like I'd once predicted. Hopefully, Portugal haven't lost any momentum by taking it easy this game cause ze Germans are gonna come at them like a King Tiger tank, leisurely strolling over and through an enemy village.
So the last couple of days have been one big party which as a result have been one big blur and just like Mr.Reliable-in-goals, Peter Cech, I've dropped the ball (on the blogging front)... only this hasn't cost my team a spot in the quarters; at worst it has cost me a blow-job by a smokin' hot Czech street walker named Hedvinka. Seriously though, after being 2-0 up, why wouldn't the Czech's pitch a tent in their defensive third and blast away any threat of danger coming from the Turks? It was 15 minutes for crying out loud!... 15 minutes! You can't really do much in 15 minutes and here is a list of things that proves it. I particularly like No.7 "Fix Something That’s Broken" which in hindsight, had the Czech's had this list before this match, they'd be facing Croatia in the quarters on Friday morning no Turkey. Credit to Turkey though, this was their second match where they came from behind to win and so far they've been the only team in the competition able to achieve this.
The Socceroos have won through to the final stage of Asian World Cup qualifying, two Brett Emerton goals and one to Harry Kewell sealing a 3-1 victory over Qatar in Doha. Emerton scored once in each half to bury the Qataris, while Kewell iced the result in the 74th minute to put Pim Verbeek's side a step closer to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa. Qatar scored a late consolation goal through Khalfan Ibrahim in the 89th minute but overall Pim Verbeek was happy with the result.
We started very well, then we started to come a little bit under pressure. But second half we did very well. The goal was at the perfect time and we played very well until the last second".
With all the tournament hype of Euro 2008, I completely forgot that the Socceroos were in action at the weekend against Qatar. And boy was I shocked to hear the Brett Emerton scored a brace! You shittin' me!... Brett Emerton. The last time he did anything descent for the Socceroos, Frank Farina was yelling orders from the bench and Breschiano still had hair! See for yourself!
Grüezi everyone! Looking at the pic it would be hard to believe I'm in Bern at the moment... especially cause everything is Orange and everywhere you turn they're speaking Dutch. The mood has been really fun... one constant party. Along with Portugal, there is a true belief that the Dutch will make the finals and that this is their year. Going by their performances in the last week they truly deserve to do well.
So the last lot of group games start tonight and while some contests have already been decided, there are at least a hand full of matches of importance. As per usual, I'll be reporting on those as we get to them so in the mean time, here's a little break down of the teams that have already qualified and how I think they'll go.
Portugal: Came into this tournament as second favourites, behind Germany and have proven why. Their star studded team is finding its rhythm and their desire to make up for their finals loss four years ago will be a driving factor in their achievements this year.
Croatia: Didn't really impress me in their opening match, although they came out against Germany to prove that they weren't here to mess around. They will meet either Turkey or Czech Republic in their next match and have the ability to make the semi's, but their inconsistency may get the better of them.
Netherlands: I've said it here and here; The Dutch are playing like a team that will make the finals and I don't see many teams being an obstacle for them. Full of confidence and plenty of depth in their squad means that they have what it takes to do it this year.
Spain: have come out of the blocks steaming and easy topped their group. They too have a wealth of talent in their squad, but are untested in the latter stages of big tournaments... when it really matters. Their lack of experience at that level may only allow them to make the semi's.
The focus will be on the winner-takes-all meeting of the Czech Republic and Turkey in Geneva. After a win and a loss each, the two teams are level in second place on points, goal difference and goals scored, so if they draw over 90 minutes, under UEFA regulations there will be a penalty shoot-out. I hope it gets to that cause there is no better way of deciding who wins than by the pressures of a penalty shoot out. I love to see who can hold their nerve and who crumbles under the pressure.
I predict Turkey 2 v 2 Czech (Turkey to win on penalties 4-3)
This match is likely to be uneventful. Portugal have qualified and Switzerland have been eliminated. At best the Swiss, still licking their wounds will want to walk away with some pride and Portugal will probably field their B team so everyone gets a run.
Wow... Greece love breaking records. In 2004 they were the first team in Euro history to win their opening match and the final against the same opponent. In '06 they were the first team ever to have won the Euro and not qualified for the World Cup and now in '08, Greece are the first team to have come to the tournament to defend their title and lose both of their opening group matches. So going by the trend, 2010 promises to be a massive year... a World Cup, ageing and retiring players and a coach whose tenor may come to an end at the close of this tournament; yep it looks like Greece will have to learn how to play football again. Full credit to Russia though. They got that all important first goal and then locked up shop for the night... ah tournament football at it's best! *snickers to himself sarcastically* They still have a lot of work to do.
Losing a match in stoppage time is one of the most demoralising things that can happen to you in football and for that I almost feel bad for Sweden. They possibly deserved a draw from this match cause even though they were the underdogs going into the game, they still played as well as they could and pressured Spain in patches. If they can pick themselves up against Russia in the next match, they'll be right to qualify for the next round. Had they held out for another 30 seconds or so, they would have gone into their final match needing only a draw to progress... now the pressure is on!
Otto Rehhagel spoke out after his teams opening defeat to Sweden four days ago and said that they played a game plan even unknown to himself. I mean he set up his team with 5 defenders and couldn't believe that they so conservatively... go figure! Guus Hiddink on the other hand came out and said:
We took our wallets out of our pockets and gave them to the Spanish team... We need more experience and to learn very quickly. For most of the players it's their first appearance in a major tournament."
At least Guus accepted that his team played naively and will be looking to make a mends in this match. To be fair though, both coaches are master tacticians so I expect their teams to come out with a different mindset for this match. Wouldn't it be funny if reigning champs Greece purposely started the tournament badly to send a false sense of security through the other teams in the group and go on a German style "Blitz" to the final!? I like the sound of it, but don't see it happening... if anything quarter finals at best.
This is going to be an interesting match up cause both teams won their first game of the tournament and another win will put either of them through to the next round. Out of the two, Spain impressed me most cause they kept possession and passed the ball around a lot better than what the Swedes did against a defensive Greece. Sweden is a physical team and even though they'll be chasing most of the match, I still feel that they have the ability to cause Spain some headaches.
The Dutch put on another stunning display to destroy World Cup finalists France, in what was an action packed match. It was the second elusive scalp they'd taken in the matter of four days. Quite simply the Dutch were a masterclass above their experienced opponents and very much deserved the win. For 30 minutes in the first half, the French struggled to even touch the ball, but once Ribery got into the game things started to turn for the them, although they were'nt clinical enough to capitalise on their chances and instead were made to pay. The Dutch played out of their skin and Kuyt, Sneijder, van Bronckhorst, van Nistelrooy and van der Vaart played tirlessly and chased down everything. At 1-0 up, van Basten made some ballsy subs by bringing on Robben and van Persie... quality subs to have at your disposal and they turned the game on its head. Within minutes Robben had broken down the left flank and sent in a thunderous cross for RvP to volley home. It purely was a great game to watch and based on form I'm backing the Netherlands to make the finals this year, where they'll meet Portugal.
I really did expect more from Italy in this tournament... and the same applies with France, so I hope that in the next match they both self destruct and play out a scoreless draw thus giving Romania a chance to make it to the quarters. At least Romania came to this tournament to give it a real crack and are putting in 110% every match. It was unlucky that Mutu missed the penalty in the dieing minutes, but these things happen and he publicly apologised to his country, which must be commended... what do the Azzuri have to say for themselves!? They must still be on a World Cup hangover cause their prima donna attitude has gotten the better of them... all they need to do now is piss on their fans to complet a typically Italian job.
I'm a big fan of Dutch football and I'm not sure if you know, but I hate the Azzurri, so watching Holland pummel Italy the other day was bliss. The French, on the other hand, bring a new set of cards to the table. You could say that Van Basten knew how to exploit Italian defences, after all he was a brilliant craftsman who plied his trade in Italy with Ac Milan for 6 years, but will he know how to break down the French and their stubborn defence? And on the flip-side, how will he plug the defensive holes that appeared against Italy and protect Edwin van der Sar from the mighty French onslaught of Benzima, Henry, Ribbery and Anelka, which need to find their feet tonight? One thing is for sure, this game will be like a cracker in your undies... minus the hummus. :)
I predict: Netherlands 1 v 1 France
All this talk of the Dutch master, Marco van Basten, got me excited:
While Donadoni calls for calm after Italy were annihilated by Holland, Romania prepare for their best chance yet at taking one step closer to the next stage. If they play their cards right they could pull off a draw, at best... I just don't think Mutu Romania has enough firepower to beat the experience of 11 girls in the Azzurri blue.
It's hard to say whether Poland were robbed or not by that last minute penalty decision cause realistically they should have been down 3-0 at half time. Luckily for them though, Austria made a mess of almost every attacking opportunity they had and in the end I think a draw was a fair result... Also, I'm sick of English refs trying to make the game about themselves. In Germany '06 it was Graham Poll, who gave Josip Simunic 3 yellow cards and last night it was Howard Webb who disrupted proceedings... If you're Polish the result was probably as fair as a kick in the Beenhakkers.
If you hear me talking funny today it's cause I just burnt my tongue eating humble-pie and wondering how I was so wrong about this match. Thankfully I didn't have any money riding on it... which is strange cause If I was sure of two things when I woke up yesterday they were: 1. Italy have sent their a second string woman's team to this tournament and 2. that Germany would beat Croatia... but I guess that's football for ya and luckily for me I won't be sleeping with the fishes tonight. Overall I'd say it was a win-win!
This is a do or die match already and Austria have the home advantage so it'll be interesting to see how the Poles come out in this match. They played an aggressivly defensive game against the Germans in game one, while the Austrians had several chances of their own against Croatia... These teams have a history of scoring lots of goals against each other so this is poised to be an exciting match.
The industrious Germans face their second hurdle tonight... a Croatian team that didn't really impress in their first match. I don't think it's difficult to figure out who I think will bring home the small goods.
So the co-hosts are the first team to be illiminated from the tournament and in departing left 2/3rds of the stadium in tears of sorrow and the remaining 1/3rd in tears of joy... although there were torrential rains throughout the match so those tears may have been the dripping faces of drenched spectators. Fuck it, tears of joy and sorrow sounds more passionate. Anyway, Turkey now have one last chance against the Czech's to join Portugal in qualifying but I don't think they have what it takes.
The Portuguese took a step closer to the title by turning it on against the Czechs. Ronaldo played a big part in their dominance with two assists and one goal, while Deco pulled the strings from the midfield like a finely tuned whore earning her meal ticket... and he even did the dirty jobs that he doesn't get paid extra for. Now thats dedication!
Defending Champions Greece came into the tournament to prove that their success in '04 wasn't a fluke, yet they approached this match with a very defensive way. They played deep unattractive football and resorted to pumping balls deep into the corners for their full backs to run onto. Only until they conceded a wonder-strike by Zlatan Ibrahimovic did they come out and play, but by that stage it was too late and they went down another goal. It'll be interesting to see how they line up against Russia at the weekend seeing as Russia will be holding possession and play well through the middle of the park. It'll mean the Greeks have to come out and play... thing is, I don't thik they know how to and I don't feel they'll make it to the next round.
I had big expectations of the Russians going into this tournament and thought that they would provide the youthful Spanish side with some major headaches. As it turns out it went the other way and the Spaniards were able to capitalise on a naive Russian defense. Iniesta's passing was superb all night and they really showed signs of a team that will progress to the next stage. Even though the Russians lacked that killer instinct up front, they held a lot of possession so it'll be interesting to see how Guus Hiddink adjusts the team to capitalise on their possession.
The Dutch were lucky to take a 26th-minute lead after Ruud van Nistelrooy turned in Giovanni van Bronckhorst's effort despite being clearly offside... and that's when the flood gates opened. Watching wave after wave of attacks as Holland tore through the Itie defence almost brought a tear to my eyes. For once Holland lived up to their pre-tourny hype and for once they made a usually 'ever-strong' Italian wall of defenders look like rubble after a wave of bombings.
As for the van Nistelrooy's offside goal I have two comments:
1. Typical!
2. Uefa backed the desicion and it stands, so get on with it Italy.
The first stale-mate of the tournament... which is pretty hard to believe when you have the attacking prowess of Ribbery, Mutu, Anelka, Benzima and Henry in the squads battling each other. As per usual though, France got off to a slow start and generally find themselves gearing up later in a tournament. Seeing as they're in the "Group'o'death" it probably means that they'll have to pull a finger out in their next match cause it's against a young Dutch team brimming with confidence at the moment and given the way they ripped open World Champions Italy, runners up France could be in for a tough night. Having said that, I think France and Holland will progress from this group, but it'll definately go down to the wire.
Lukas Podolski netted both goals against the country of his birth to give Germany a winning start to their Euro 2008 campaign against Poland in Klagenfurt. I don't really know why the Pol's showed up for this one... They were outclassed all over the pitch and ze Germans could have made them pay on several occasions. Most notably Klose's miss early in the first half that slipped just past the post while the score was still dead locked at 0-0. If they're to progress to the next round, they'll have to be more clinical than that.
Spurs bound midfielder Luka Modric scored a decisive penalty as Croatia held out for a 1-0 win over co hosts Austria. The Austrians were lucky not to snatch one back late in the match, but I felt as though they lacked "tournament experience" and that's what cost them this match. Plus I hate when a team wins by scoring the solitary goal in a match and it's from the penalty spot. And what's worst than that is scoring it early... say like the 4th minute! As for the kisses Croatian head coach Slaven Bilic was blowing... I think he'll need to aim them at the heavens or to his B-52 bombers cause the Germans are on their way and that means destruction is too.
Portugal's star studded lineup dominated the majority of this match, as expected and some creative play in their attacking third allowed them to unlock the Turkish defense as if it were a beat up car and they were the shiny new clothes hanger reaching through the gap in the window to get you in. Portugal are up there as favourites to take out the tournament, so don't feel so bad Turkey, you've still got the Swiss and the Czechs coming your way... and we all know how well they played!!!
This is a massive call early on, but I think Portugal and Germany will meet in the semi's. I'm undecided so far as to which of those two teams will make the final though.
I'm a huge fan of tournament football. All the anticipation, the pre-match hype and the fanfare that is built up for the tournament. What I hate more than anything though is when this wait is over; you've watched an elaborate theatrical performance by some global pop sensation, you're in the mood for football and get then hit with Switzerland v Czech!!!!!!! (I can't emphasise the exclamation marks enough!!!!!!). I know that the draw was picked out of a hat months ago, but shit... months of waiting was capped off with this! The Swiss took the game to the Czechs and were unlucky to concede... let's hope they get it right for their next match against Turkey. That's all I can muster for this match cause I was bitterly dissapointed.
I've been doing quite a bit of travelling lately and sometimes I forget where I am in this world. As you can see by the new background image, I just stepped off the plane and am now kicking it at the Euro 2008 finals! From today onwards I will be coming to you live and full time! Hold onto your hats cause I'm about to do to you what Holland did to Italy last night!... make you look beyond average!
